Printer list

We just loaded OSX on a G4 here. Now, everytime we shut down the computer, we lose all the printers in the printer list. We have to go to the printer setup utility and re-add them every time after a restart. Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

Where are your PPD's located and are they up to date? Which OS X version are you
running? Are you printing to the printers from the Classic Environment?
I had this problem setting up 10.4.8. It turned out that I used some of the PPD's that
came with the OS, I had a couple that were out of date, and it didn't like where I
located them. I don't use Classic (obviously), but fixing the other two items stopped
them from vanishing.

Thanks for the reply. Here's what I have:

Running OSX 10.4.9, and the PPD's are in the following:

Hardrive - Library - Printers - PPD's

Let me know if they need to be relocated. I am sure that they're all up to date too, we use them on some G5 macs and don't have any problem.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if it's correct or not but since I put them in HD > Users > User Name >
Library > Printers I've had no problems. The location you put them in should also
be correct IMO, and is where Acrobat sets up it's PPD's, but that's not where I
ended up locating them. Maybe somebody else knows the whys behind it.

Did you repair permissions after the install? Also a good idea to run fsck -fy after installing. How did you set up these printers? Your post is the first I've seen with this issue. Are any of them set as the default printer?

I've had OS X (Tiger) ask me if I want to reset my printers every now and then. If you choose yes it deletes all of your printers. If you choose no it keeps them. Not sure if yours is doing this or not. It doesn't ask me this every time I open printer setup but occasionally it does. I learned the hard way to always answer "NO".

What would the reasoning be behind that feature? It makes no sense to me. I know I
never got a dialog box like that before it lost mine, and additionally it didn't lose all
of them, just half of them. :? It hasn't happened since I did the stuff I mentioned earlier,
and IMO it shouldn't matter where the PPD's are located as long as you don't move them.
I don't claim to be a wizard with this stuff though.

I have no idea behind the reasoning of that feature unless the OS is thining it's seeing something wrong but I've never had a problem selecting "no" when it asks. I know I've seen it more than once but I think I've only seen it in Tiger. It's happened on OS X Server (Tiger) more than once because when I selected Yes the first time I had to recreate our Nexus printers that Preps uses. It's done it on my Intel Mac at home too.

Edit: ...but it always deletes all printers, not just some of them when this happens to me.
