Check your Network Settings in your System Preferences.
You should see an Airport network show up if it's active.

What OS are you running?

I believe you should have two.
One for your wired network and one for the Airport base.
(that's the way it shows up on the iMac's we have here with Airport).
Have you reset the Airport base? Pull the power cord and wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. All the green lights should be blinking.

Is the remote printer connected up to the Airport Network or is it hardwired to the LAN?
Is it behind a solid wall?
(I ask due to the fact that we have a real firewall on one wall, it's a wall that has a piece of steel in it to block a fire from coming into another room, and the Airport can't "see" through it.)

PS.
You may want to upgrade to 10.4.9.

printer is in airport express network in another room by itself

in order to print, he has to switch to the printer airport, can't find it throught the base station. it's not communimating with the base station
