almaink, I was just over on "MacRumorsForum.com" hoping to get an answer to my question but I feel unless your a wealthy independent ass***e and always have the latest greatest you get ignored

My question was and still is, The validity in installing Tiger on my converted G3. I installed a Sonnet G4-500 CPU on the machine and have 2 internal HDs, 80 and 60 gb each, and maxed the RAM to 1 gb. I have not been able to get a straight answer from anyone as to weather Tiger will run as well as or better than Panther (which is my current OS), or even if it will run at all for that matter. I keep seeing messages like "Does not support upgraded CPUs" which kind of tells me I'm screwed from the get go.

Any thoughts? :? :?

Using the delta updaters from Software Update are such a crap shoot. It is so much more reliable to download the combo updaters and run those. That way you're sure to get everything updated. The delta's don't always get all the files updated that it thinks it does. But the update works just fine.

I've got a converted G4 at home (Blue&White G3 motherboard with Sonnet G4-733 CPU)....I am currently running 10.3.9, but at one point I did install 10.4 on another partition to see if it worked, and it seemed to be fine.

Thanks Bob, that's the first direct answer I've seen in days. I have 10.3.9 running on the 80gb HD, and have the 60gb HD cleared. I was going to install a clean version of OS 9.2.2 on it, but I don't want to have Classic anywhere near Tiger if I decide to try it.

Thanks again

Should be a non-issue Sparky. But I will ad this. If you don't have a robust video card Tiger may not be worth installing. My B&W with the stock 16 meg card worked with Tiger but the "eye candy" like Widgets and Fastuser switching always brought up the spinning disk. After I bought and installed an ATI 9200 PCI card tho it seemed like a new Mac. I also installed the PCI Extreme app and got Quartz Extreme working. I bought that card on eBay for $60. I no longer have the B&W tho as I found a G4 DP 533 with a gig of Ram on ebay for $300 and sold my B&W for $200, so for $100 I got a faster Mac with a superdrive, that is more than enough for home use. If I was you I'd start looking on eBay because once Adobe releases the CS3 Suite PPC Mac prices will really drop.
I wouldn't be surprised if a Quicksilver DP 800 with a gig of ram will drop to under $200.

I have the same card in mine also pushing a 19" ViewSonic LCD, and I also got the Superdrive from Otherworld Computing for $55. plus a firewire 800 in another PCI slot. I'm happy with it now, but as you say once CS3 is released I'm screwed. I already found out that Acrobat 8 won't work on anything less than 10.4.8, and with my paltry 500mzh I can't even play my Links Championship Edition, or even consider getting the Tiger Woods edition.

Once I fully recover from my by-pass surgery and get a few bills paid off I might consider financing a new Mac Pro, and just keep my old G3 as a dedicated scanning and OCR station, until the Powerlook III dies. Since I'm the main man at work and we only have 2 Mac work stations I get to be the 3rd Install on any software we get at work, so at least I don't pay for that.

You do know that PowerLook III will work in OSX don't you?
The PowerLook II didn't but III will. Either Silverfast or Vuescan.

almaink, I have beaten this to death, not only in this forum but in many others as well. I don't have the $500+ to get the "pro" version of Silverfast to "try" to see if it will work. I've done everything I can concieve of and the Powerlook III with the SCSI interface will definately NOT work on my G3. I have Firewire converters and SCSI converters up my a** all to no avail, it will not happen.

Maybe it's just me  but nothing I've tried has worked

To bad your not closer as i'd love to see if i could get that thing to work. I had my Powerlook II semi'working in Panther, but decided to just junk it and get an Epson firewire rig. I used Vuescan not Silverfast.
