Will not shut down

Hey, Im running jaguar on a g4 and Im having shut down problems. If I work long, opening more than a few apps. my computer decides it doesn't want to shut down. It started at the end of last week and does it every single day now. I click on shut down and nothing happens at all. I do it again and again. I relaunch finder, still no luck. Any ideas?

We just got Panther with that problem - I didn't have a problem with Jaguar, but the fix for Panther is to first quit all applications then shutdown.

I know that we used to be able to shut down and the applications would automatically quit. Not so anymore. I have to quit out of Suitcase 10 (which must be running to work) before I can shut down.

Just don't get me started about fonts, Suitcase and OS X. Ugh.

Just leave it on. There are UNIX maintainence tasks that run at odd hours anyway. I would suggest a UPS battery backup with a software shutdown in case of a power outage.

I have that problem with Suitcase 10 as well. I have to force quite suitcase to get the machine to restart.

fixing permissions always seems to be a first place to start with OS X. after that I'd look to making sure the hard disk is OK. Possibly the finder preferences are corrupt? I'm not real up on trouble shooting OS X yet.

I have problems shutting down sometimes when classic is still running...

try shutting down/force quitting classic first, then do a shut down...

also look at your console log and see if there is anything of interest there.

Repair permissions and run fsck -fy. Safari may be having an issue with fonts. Make sure you don't have duplicates in the same font location. Empty Safari's cache and if that don't work use the Safari reset. If you don't run Panther 24/7 you should also get a utility to run the cron scripts like Cocktail or Onyx.

You can spend hours and hours trying to find the problem. You can reformat that hard drive in a few hours and I'm pretty sure that shut down problem will go away. Then you have a fresh and clean hard drive.

Why do you want to shut it down anyway?

It isn't windows.
