System Works

Just had a look at Symantic website - no systemworks for Mac>
What do people do for maintenance, defraging, disk scan etc.
And do you have any anti virus software on your Mac?

The only tool I've been using lately has been applejack. There are other options out there Techtool pro and Alsoft Diskwarrior, but those aren't free and applejack has been able to fix every issue i've had where the system wouldn't boot.

You didn't mention what OS you're running, so this is general info:

You don't really need any anti-virus for a Mac (as of today anyway).
The only thing a Mac can do with a virus is to pass it on to someone with a PC via a file attached in an email or an infected file placed on a PC from a CD or DVD that was burned on a Mac.

And...
as far as defragging, or disk scans, this is not necessary on a OS X Mac (it's Unix, and it runs best in a semi-fragged state due to the journaling of the hard drive).
The only real "routine" maintenance you need to do is:
1. Make sure that you run the Cron scripts (if your mac is on 24 hours a day, and not asleep, these will run automatically at approx. 3am, daily, weekly and monthly).
2. Make a back-up of your drive.
3. Before and after installing any software on your Mac, run "repair permissions" from your Disk Utilities (located in your Applications folder/Utilities).

When system updates are put out by Apple, go to the Apple support web site and check to see if anyone has any problems before you do the update.

Other than that, you really only need to do repairs/maintenance when problems arise.

Macs are pretty rock solid.

hope this helps,
David

PS. Do Not Run Norton on an OS X Mac.

Thanks guys for your input.
I have 10.4.7
David, are you able to give specific info rather than general knowing this.
Also for 10.3.9.
Why do you say don not run Norton?

Any flavour of Norton will kill a Mac dead, no matter. Google it, sorry too tired.

The info is general for all versions of OS X (they all do Cron, they all have Disk Utilities).

Norton killed my Mac at home. I had to erase and reinstall my OS and all my apps. Took me about a week to figure out exactly what had happened, and even disk Warrior couldn't help me.

Live and learn,
David
