Tried this routine but it's still happening:
Delete Finder preferences using Finder
Open a Finder window and navigate to Home > Library > Preferences folder.
Trash the file com.apple.finder.plist
If you are using Mac OS X 10.3 or later, also trash the Finder Sidebar preferences file, com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Perform one of the following tasks:
Log out, then in again.
Relaunch the Finder by choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu, selecting Finder, then clicking the Relaunch button.
Empty the Trash.

Do you have the keyboard shortcut active in Keyboard and Mouse preference pane? By default it's apple + option + "t". Could be you are selecting it by mistake? You can turn it off or change it.

yes, and repairing permissions as well. This one is very strange.
It doesn't happen in my backup user so it has to be something in the main account only.

Open Activity Viewer and see whats calling it. Something has got to be making it active.
I guess you could trash it's preferences as well. It's in ~/library/preferences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist

Most likely the file was corrupted. You can get an app to check your preferences for corruption here.
