I'd recommend doing an Archive and Install of Tiger rather than an Upgrade. You can preserve User and Network settings.
Afterwards, be sure to go through your /Previous Systems/Previous System 1/Library/ folder to move any third-party additions back into your new /Library/ folder so you'll have them available for your applications. One especially important folder is the ScriptingAdditions folder which has additions for Quark and Adobe. (If they aren't in place, double-clicking on a Photoshop document in the Finder will launch/activate Photoshop but not open the file).
Depending on the number of files you have, one thing to remember is to give Spotlight a good week or so for it to index the files on your drive. I've seen many users who installed Tiger and after less than a couple hours, decided that the performance of Tiger was horribly slow compared to Panther, so they reverted back to Panther instead. Just be patient and let Spotlight have a chance to do its job before making any judgement about performance. (When the Spotlight menu item stops pulsing, that only means it's done building an index of what files are on your drive, it still needs to go through them and index the
contents of each file. That's what can take a while).
Hope this helps....
