Well, internally, dates are stored as a "double", which is a 64bit floating point value.

In other words, a numeric value somewhere between (roughly) -18,446,744,074,000,000,000.0 and +18,446,744,074,000,000,000.0, that represents the number of seconds since Jan 1, 2001. Looks like something probably went funky in the formatter, which is the object that translates the "date" object to the "string" object that's displayed to screen.
