186 gb Hard Drive - FULL??

I had a message pop up on my G5 today saying my drive is full.

I have a backup 80gb drive where i store my prepress files so the system disk should only have the OS and some desktop files on it.

I went on the net and found a utility called WhatSize which shows where he biggest directories are and the Log directory in Library was holding 173 gb.

One log was 136gb and another was 38gb - they have now been nuked.

What the ?? is going on with these log files in OSX?

Has anyone else had this happen?

D.

If you're on OS 10.4.x and are running Acrobat 7 (version 7.0.3 or lower), your console log file is being filled with thousands of messages whenever acrobat is the frontmost application, whether you have a PDF open or not. If you upgrade to 7.0.5 or higher, that will stop the messages in OS 10.4.

If that's not the cause, then you probably have some other program causing errors and writing to your logs. Open up one of the big log files and see what app is writing all the messages.

You can most likely delete all those logs file safely (keep the most current one around perhaps). I'm sure there are utilities out there that will help delete them if need be

I found a utility called Mac Janitor that fixes such things. We had a G4 with 10.2.8 that wouldn't work at all. Turns out they had been shutting it down every night, so it wasn't doing its normal behind the scenes maintenance.

You should be able to find it a download.com

There are other applications like Cocktail and Onyx, there's even a Tiger cache cleaner app. They can all be found on www.versiontracker.com.
If you do routine cleaning using these to clear caches and log files, you should be fine.

Sorry only running Acrobat 6.x at the moment - but i will try and open one of the logs next time and see where it is coming from - or hopefully it won't happen again.......

What were the logfiles? This will tell you what application is logging so extensively, and probably give you a good idea of where to address the problem.
Also, be careful deleting logfiles.. Some applications can't 'create' a new logfile, merely append to an existing one. Best to cat /dev/null to the file, and blank it that way.
