new imac 1.83ghz intel duo processor
I just bought a new mac...one with an intel duo processor that I heard was very fast when compared to a G5 processor of similar speed.
Now I'm wondering if I will be exchanging it for the G5 model sometime soon.
I hear that some applications do not run fast at all unless they are optimimzed for the intel binary (whatever) code. I'll be installing the same old apps from work: Adobe CS2 and Quark 6.5 this weekend. (if I CAN INSTALL ANOTHER QUARK WITHOUT PURCHASING A LICENCE).
I'll let you all know how it goes but thought maybe someone else has already gone down the same road. I read somewhere that Photoshop can be VERY SLOW when the file sizes are large.

Current apps run under Rosetta. I've heard they run slowly but haven't seen it first hand.

Forgot to add this bit. Adobe have said that they will not be altering their release shedule to update CS3 to run on Intel macs, so it looks like it will be the middle of 2007 before we get anything new from them. They have an 18 month / 2 year release plan

Just saw a benchmark for photoshop cs2 on the intel processor:
It's in the range of .4 to .6 of the g5.
Now I don't think this will be too bad considering the fact that the biggest files I'd be working on would probobly be about 25 MB or so from home. (mostly digital camera stuff). There must be a speed boost from my old 7300 - 180 running a g3 accelerator card at 400mhz. Once Adobe writes code for the intel processor I guess the speed will get much better as well.
As I said earlier, I'll try and keep everyone posted on my experience with this situation. Anyways i have 30 days to make an exchange if I find that I don't like the intel processor.

How do pspdfppd
there's a troubleshooting thread for intel imacs on MacFixIt at
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?...60228120838511
In fact there are performance comparisons and all sorts of other info on MacFixIt regarding these and other machines, I go there everyday.

Well I've been using the imac for about a month now .......
I guess it's to my advantage that I've never worked with a G5 Imac because I am finding the Intel pretty fast even running in Rosetta.
Compared to a 7300 with a 400mhz G3 upgrade card (at home) and a 1ghz G5 (?) at work (I think it's 1ghz can't remember the speed on that one). everything still seems pretty fast.
I've been off on sick leave from work but have been told that I'll be using a new G5 with dual 2ghz processors so I suppose that will be very very fast compared to the intel Imac I have.
If it just keeps getting better and better with new software releases that are programmed for universal binary than I think I'll be happy with the intel.
I had a lot of problems for a while running the "tiger woods pga tour 2005" golf game but after a few reinstalls it has worked fine for the past few weeks.

I haven't seen any system that hasn't had problems running Tiger Woods...
Also, I was wondering if you (or anyone reading this) have had a crack at running Boot Camp & Windows on your Intel Mac, and if so, how does it go? (sorry if there's already a thread for this, I haven't seen it)

I usually don't like giving second hand info, but I will anyways . I was talking to our IT guy at work who runs XP on an Intel Imac and he says it runs perectly. Said he had a small issue with a driver or two, but beyond that no problems. He is about to try out a new program that will let you "switch on the fly" between the OS's, instead of having to do a reboot.
