Is the imagesetter booted up?

How can you tell in OS 10.3.9 when an imagesetter is booted up and ready to go? Is there some utility like the Chooser in OS versions 9.x and prior that shows when an attached printing device is booted up and ready?

Thanks,

Al Ferrari

You choose your output device in page setup. No chooser, Printer Setup Utility takes its place. It's located in the utilities folder.

almaink,

Thanks for the response, but I didn't ask "How to choose an output device." In OS 9.x and prior, the Chooser not only allowed choosing a device, it also informed you when it was up and ready to go. It is that second function that I am looking for in OSX.

Does it show up in the list in the OS X Printer Setup? If so, there is an entry in the listing for "Status" of the printers.

Also, if it has an IP address and you know it for the imagesetter you can ping it from the "Network Utilities".

Also, if you are running Classic on the OS X machine you can still run the OS 9 Chooser and see if it shows up in the Printer list.

Hey Joe,(where you goin with that gun in your hand)

My Printer setup Utility shows a status bar but all is blank.
When I double click on a printer is says its active
but I turned the input off on the rip(Harlaquin) of this printer and
it still says its active.Any ideas?

Customers aren't as apt to say stupid things if you carry a gun around with you. (That's todays tip)

I'm not sure about the status entry in OS X. I print to a WF so our imagesetter and CTP aren't listed there. I'm not at work now (off until Tuesday WOO HOO) but I think for our workflow printers or our HP LaserJet 5000 & 5100 it says "Ready" when they are on or "Offline" when they are off. I am sure they do that on our Windows PC's and I thought they did on OS X but now I'm doubting myself.

The Status colum in the Printer Setup Utility is useless for finding out if the imagesetter is booted up and ready. That colum is always blank in my experience, except when printing is actually going on. Then it says: "Printing".

Doubleclicking on a printer on the list when the status colum is blank opens up a window for that printer where it tells you "No Jobs Printing." Nice.

How do I do that, and where is the "Network Utilities"? Doing a system wide search for that on my mac returns nothing.

Going to the chooser in Clasic does work ofcourse, but I am looking for an OSX way of telling if the imagesetter is booted up and how. I run a SelectSet 7000 with Star 600 (a little long on the tooth, I know) and there is a proceedure for clearing out data from the drives that makes it boot up in "engineless mode" which would show up on the Chooser. So where would that show in OSX? I'll see if it shows up in the status colum, but since that's blank when booted up normal, I don't have much hope.

OK, I found Network Utility (singular). How do I find the IP address of my printers?

IP address can be found in the Network Preference pane in System Preferences.
