Going to OS X Tiger
Should I upgrade 10.3.9 or re-format and install Tiger fresh?

10.3.x is Panther
10.4.x is Tiger
I've seen too many posts about Tiger issues so I'll stick to Panther. Even if the latest updates resolved them, there's really nothing more beneficial in Tiger that justifies the upgrade from Panther for our end of the business. Stick to what works, unless you're a glutton for punishment.

I upgraded at home from Panther to Tiger without a reformat. No isssues OS wise. One issue had is the Epson printer. Flawless under 10.3.9 but Tiger is eating the connection. If you surf and email, Tiger is great. If you have to print (like at work) don't is the answer. If you look at most of the PPFers they are also stopped at 10.3.9. Those looking for help or are designers are are into Tiger since they don't have to interface with RIPs.

Uh, I know...
Thanks for the info ChilBear. It is for my iMac at home. No RIP to worry about. It doesn't even have a printer connected to it.

Sorry. The way your question was phrased led me to believe otherwise.
Btw, your avatar scares me.

Sorry gig0, didn't mean to sound pissy. What I meant was, I have 10.3.9 Panther now and was wondering about upgrading to 10.4 Tiger and would it be better to install it over 10.3.9 or start fresh with a re-format and install. I remember on the PC there were clearly advantages to installing XP on a fresh system than upgrading over a previous version of Windows....oh, and it is just for my Mac at home. Not a production Mac at work.

I upgraded at home... then did the format and reinstall from the ground up.
PowerBook - G4, 1.5GHZ, 2GB RAM.
Came with Panther running very, very smooth. Did the upgrade and Tiger was running Very Slow!
(boot-up especially)
Now it's blazing fast with Tiger... and I print to an Epson R300(photo) and a HP Deskjet 910 no problems.
hope this helps,
Vee
ps: Panther at work, it's a sweet OS.

I held back on Panther for ages, then upgraded pre-crimbo everything runs fine, no probs with RIPs or networking

I did the 10.3.9 to Tiger upgrade and it went fine. Later I reformatted and did a fresh install of Tiger. I think you're probably fine though to do the upgrade.
I was just being lazy, but what I think I should have done was the archive install. That way you get everything (that's what they *advertise*) from 10.x when you install 10.4.
