How long is the cable run? Going over 100' may be the problem. Another thing to try is installing Broadband Optimizer, it seems to have made file sharing quicker.

Stupid question...

Do you have a wireless connection in the office that has access to that server? Maybe the iMac is trying to use the wireless connection instead of the wired one? The wireless link would be slower than the wired one. Try turning airport off maybe.

The easiest thing for you to do is take the iMac over to where the PowerMac is and unplug the network cable from the PM and put it in the iMac. If it solves the problem, the the issue is the cable or the port the iMac is connected to on the switch. If it doesn't solve the problem, then the issue is the ethernet port on the iMac or there's something wrong with the software/OS on the iMac.

If she's running 100 Mbps, then she has 100 meters (around 300 feet theoretically) so I don't think the length would be an issue unless it's that long. Could also be a giant electric field messing with the cable if it's passing by a massive generator although I think this is unlikely.

Didn't notice the uneven speed thing before......

That's weird. Maybe only the receiving wires/pins are busted? Seems strange but you never know.

And when you switched to 100 Mbps, speed went down? You running gigabit ethernet over there?

Could just be me too.

We just remembered also (BIG DUH) my machine is connected to a router which then connects to a router in the Art Directors office

I am going to take your advice Msr ?crou ? oreille and plug into that PM power cable.

See, that's the problem with amateurs.... they FORGET to tell you 3/4 of what you need to help solve the problem :P

My switches were uplinked to a router that went bad so if a computer on switch A wanted to talk to one on switch B, it was slow because the router was messed up. If two computers connected to switch A wanted to talk, everything was fine.

If that was the case, then maybe other machines are having issues in your office. If you've changed network topology recently, then undo it or see if you mixed and matched slower speeds, bad cables, etc.

Yes, it could very well be you too. Why don't you leave the building and see if it helps

You just called me something along the lines of nut in/on the ear, you know that right?

i'd run a traceroute to the server from the slow machine...sounds like you are possibly running through your actual internet connection and not your switch.

More importantly, did you figure out the problem?

I think you Nutcase, owe the lady an apology. She asked for our help and advice and you tongue lashed her. Shame on you. I remember trying to help you when you didn't know.
