Date in Menu Bar not displaying

Okay - I feel really stupid. This should be a no brainer, but I can't see the date in the menu bar, only the time. I have "date and time" checked (Tiger)...what silly thing am I over looking?

In System Preferences go to thge date and time panel and open it. In there should be a check box called Show the date and time. Make sure there is a tick in the box.

No, that's loud and obnoxious...I was looking for just "january 4, 2006, 2:38 pm" in the menu bar...that's all. I guess I couldn't find it because it doesn't exist.
