From experience:
Font Reserve more reliable than Suitcase.
However Extensis SuitCase and FontReserve are now "one" and certainly this would, in the near future result in a new product that will bring us the best of both worlds.
Will be interesting to see if Panther's Font Book has the ability to disable DFonts. Does anyone know :?:

from the playing I did with a beta, Font Book had complete control over system fonts...might have changed since then since it's been a while..
the new version of suitcase also offers the ability to control the system fonts and manage duplicates (which were the biggest downfalls of it IMO)
haven't seen any reviews on suitcase X11, Font Agent still seems to get the job done for me..

Lammy,
While I hold no definitive answer to the required system fonts, this list comprises what I have as OSX "system" fonts. I did a lot of trial and error to get this list trimmed down. Running most of the popular apps, with no font issues, when I disable Suitcase X for a cross-check.
System/Library/Fonts/
Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
AppleGothic.dfont
AquaKanaBold.otf
AquaKanaRegular.otf
Geneva.dfont
Hei.dfont
Helvetica.dfont
Keyboard.dfont
LastResort.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
Monaco.dfont
Osaka.dfont
OsakaMono.dfont
Symbol.dfont
Times.dfont
ZapfDingbats.dfont
(kanji) Pro W3.otf

Our production fonts are handled by suitcase 10, ruuning the the OSX 10.2.8 layer.

Here's what I got it to:
Monaco.dfont
OsakaMono.dfont
Osaka.dfont
Keyboard.dfont
Symbol.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
Helvetica.dfont
LastResort.dfont
AppleGothic.dfont
Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont
ZapfDingbats.dfont
Geneva.dfont
This is a shot of Suitcase when I first boot.
then after opening a coupel of applications. . .
I ended up having to make some fonts Auto activated (green dots). . .
I do Sooooo miss that in OS 9 i could just have one or two fonts in the system and all the apps would work with them. . . . now it seems like every new application I open wants it's own specific font. . . . .

Lammey,
Thanks for updating your list. I'm going to try and get my font list trimmed downed to match yours.
I totally agree about every new app wanting it's own fonts. What a pain. Just when you think you've got a trimmed system font list, along comes some app, making you install more fonts.

careful, if you use Suitcase. It's nice that some apps with suitcase will automatically open fonts. But I found with "Address Book" specifically, it would force a font to load which took forever to start up . Then when you quit address book it would hang or take an eternity trying to close that font. setting it to be auto activated in suitcase didn't help either. So now I only open the address book when I absolutely need to, but I am sure other of the wiz-bang Apple apps do this as well

same problem, did not know you are not allowed to remove the system fonts on osX, had a big crash and had to reinstal the system.
anyway, now often when i want to open a font from suitcase i get often the errormessage that it conflict with a systemfont, i can work arround this problem, but often it includes restarting my machine.
and that's not sooo good.
but otherwise, suitcase 10 is not to bad, since it shows you the fonts, it repleaces all the font books we have laying arround here.
cheers

dimitri,
you may need to enable the root user to remove some of the system fonts. I got around the OS lock ups when removing the wrong fonts by booting from an OS9 CD then putting the fonts back in the os X system folder. This only works if your system will boot into os 9 though.
