How to create postscript file in OSX
I know it sounds ancient, I need to create postscript files for the RIP software and send to film output-when I said ancient that means it doesn't even rip PDF's. Under OS9, I used to rely on printer-driver LaserWriter8 and PPD- Linotronic 930 to create my PS files. Since there is no chooser in OSX, how do I get around the postscript issue?

In Print Center you can just create an IP printer, specify your PPD as your lino PPD..
in the OS X print box, you have the option to save as a postscript file, I think under file options

In the print window, click the pop up for "copies & pages". scroll down to output options. Click "save as file" and choose Postscript. should be good to go.

Postscript output
I'm having the same problem, only different. I am in a SMALL shop with no ethernet network connections. My proofer is a USB inkjet and I send my postscipt files to a ECRM/ Konica EVJetsetter 8100H. So I am unable to "add" a printer in the Print Center as my Appletalk is being used for the modem. I can make a PDF ok but it does not retain my very important trapping.
I can make .ps files from Xpress under Classic, where I just go to the chooser to select my Laserwriter ( I stll get warnings about not having Appletalk active though). But Illustrator, for example, I have a printer choice of my inkjet or Adobe PDF. I can save a .ps file, BUT it is a COMPOSITE!.
Any suggestions?

what version of OS X are you running? In 10.3 (panther) you can just Choose "USB" from the pop up at the top of the printer setup window.

Not quite, but close?
I'm running OS 10.2.8, which is going to change soon. I have discovered through discussions with a Konica tech that what I need to do is create a desktop printer using my RIP ppd and "print to disk" to a postscript file. This is a "new" feature of OS 10.3, so for now I'm stuck.
I don't think a USB desktop printer will generate a ".ps" file.

Hmmm... Ok, maybe I'm not understanding the print to PostScript issue correctly.
But...
To print to PostScript, wouldn't you just select a PostScript print(driver) to print to, then in the OSX Print settings, (under the Copies & Pages pop-up), select Output Options and in the resulting dialog box select Save as File (PostScript)?
For device independent PostScript you'd use Adobe PDF or Distiller PPD reference.

Postscript Printer
You can create a Virtual Printer. If you go to the Print Center and choose "IP Printing". In the printer address type "localhost" and then choose the PPD that is need. This will create a virtual postscript printer. You should be able to create a postscript file that you are able to rip.

i had this problem with Quark 6 and found that your PPD's should be copied into the user>library>preferences>quark>quarkxpress 6.0>ppd
so i would assume if you have multiple users on each workstation that each users library must have the ppds for quark.
after printing the postscript file is pretty standard. setup your print options bleed, marks, yada-yada.
click "printer..." goto "output options" check "save as file" select postscript.
click save. and print
