Connecting OS X 10.1 to NT4 Server

I pulled out an old G3 Beige running OS x 10.1 (it won't run anything higher) and I'm trying to connect it to our NT 4 server. I can only connect as the NT 4 Administrator, and even that doesn't give me the shares I need.

I know the real answer is to buy a new mac AND and new server, but things are tight around here. I'm just supposed to make this old crap work.

Is there any way to connect these two antiques?

Thanks,
Kevin

You could also look into PC-MacLan for a third party solution. I have it on our new Dell and the old PC running our Harlequin RIP and several Macs w/OS X and a couple running OS 9 all connected together.

In OS X you must know the IP of the PC you're connecting to. then press the (cmnd+K) key in the finder to "Connect to Server" enter the connection as a smtpput IP number here) and connect that way.

Make sure you've got the "File Services for Macintosh" service running on the NT 4 Server box. On your shares you want to use, create Mac Volumes and you should be good to go. Your Macs should then see the shares with no problms.

We tried putting in the Panther CD and and immediately get a message saying we cannot put this version on this computer. I'm not sure why.

I don't mind using 10.1 (my stripper will be using this computer to enter his time and materials into the billing spreadsheets). But I do need it to connect to our NT4, that's where the billing info is.

My os 9 macs and my Panther macs can log on the NT4 just fine. It's just this old Beige G3.

I've tried afp://(ip), cifs://(ip), smb://(ip), and I tried smtp://(ip). Samba got me in as admin but not all the shares were available.

Kevin

Did you install Xpostfacto first? Also some CD drives can't boot the Panther CD, I had to use my external Yamaha CDRW to boot it. Panther is like a different OS compared to 10.1. so much more refined and way faster.

MacServe IP

Makes your NT server speak appletalk and support OS9/OSX formatted files.

We had an NT4 server with MacServe IP at each shop until we ran out of space and I screamed xserve! Xserve is soooooo much more stable and reliable.

I did not try xpostfacto. I will though. I don't have an external cd drive. I'll try to access the Panther installer through the network and see if that does the trick.

Check out the forums here for help with Xpostfacto, it costs $25 US to post but it's free to browse.
