Your older Macs running MacOS 9.x will be unable to share their files with Macs running Tiger using AFP - but this is not a problem if you just set up MacOS 9.x so that it allows file sharing connections using TCP/IP. When you do that, the error message about "incompatible AFP protocols" will go away.

To enable file sharing connections using TCP/IP. Open the File Sharing control panel, and check the box to enable the "Enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP" option.
From Apple's Discussions board's.
Hope it helps. Helped me.

We log into the OS9 computers by typing just the IP address and we log into the PC's using SMB.
