Technically, Apple still makes the iPods.
But a technological hook up with HP wouldn't be all bad. I think there could be a lot of synergies (ooh, marketing speak!). I'm a real fan of their scanners and printers, not so much their computers.
But I really doubt that Apple would give up it's independence so long as Steve Jobs is running it. Think back to the time when he re-established himself at Apple. He killed the clones, and changed the Apple line up to something a little more price conscious and then added the peripherals (iPod, iShuffle, iLife, etc.)
I think that maybe Moto and IBM marooned Apple in terms of the MHz race, and couldn't/wouldn't develop new processors strictly for personal computer usage. In a way, I really can't blame Jobs for going the direction he has, but I would have liked to have seen the PPC architecture continue to be developed for Apple's computers. As much as I am underwhelmed with the iPod and it's variations, it has brought serious $$'s to Apple, and will (hopefully) help them to continue producing personal computers.
But like many die-hard Mac users, I'm feeling a little embarrassed these days, after
YEARS of Intel bashing, finding out that my next Mac may possibly be powered by the darkside. It's kind of like finding out your Corvette's engine was built by Ford... 8O
