How many folders on your server ??

Atm we have about 240 job folders on our main work server. My mac (OSX10.3.9) hangs a lot when I browse the top level. How many folders can u get away with before your mac starts to hang??

What type of server are you running?

I am running OSX "10.2.8" and have had no problems with the system hanging with over 250 folder in a sub folder.

I have my setup on a Volume called "Prepress" and a folder in that volume called "Client Folder". All jobs have a job number assigned to them and for each job there is a folder in the Client Folder.

I"m running an Xserve and a G5, both on version 10.3.X (server and workstation, respectively) and I have over 450 job folders on my server. I will admit it sometimes takes a second or two for the folder to appear with all the folders in it, but i've never had it lock up on me. I do also have all my folders in a "Jobs" folder. i only have about 10 folders on the root level.

Don't know if this means anything, but FYI.

Dave

FYI, I got a Windows 2000 server with 1698 individual folders and growing. When accessing over the network the first time on OS X 10.3.X it hangs for a sec or two and then for the refreshes wen I scroll down the first time but thats it.

Good luck.

We used to keep 999 folders as standard in each main job category. They did hang a little, but not too bad. We were advised by our Esko rep that some of their utilities for file transfer had a terrible time with 1000+ folders, so we divided them up a bit out of caution recently.
