desktop icons

Is their a way to set the preferences so that the HD icon stays put upon restart or does it always reset to upper right corner?

not that I know of . . . I don't keep the hard disks on the desktop, in the Finder prefs I uncheck that box (to keep it out of the wrong hands) and only display CDs, DVDs, and Connected Servers.
'Then set "New Finder windows open: Computer" in Finder prefs - I use this to navigate deep down to the system and application stuff. All the other folders I use often are in the sidebar, just a click away!

I know one of the guys here unchecked *snap to grid* and had his HD icon fluttering all over the desktop for a couple weeks. Until someone got annoyed with chasing it and put it back.

not real worried with that at my shop, I'm the only one who comes within 15 ft of the MAC. But, yea if there were lots of users, I agree.

know where that is sally?... I created a quick layout in photoshop, kinda like a "control Panel" or "skin" (commonly used for applications) and saved as a .jpg to use as my desktop background, then place folders and drives on top of it to keep stuff on my desktop(mainly Jobs in Progress) organized AND interesting looking, instead of just scattered all around. I have one "customer jobs folder" that jobs go in once they are printed and out the door(organized by Job #) but between artwork coming in and going back out the door, I like them on the desktop readily available and easy to access.

All of my commonly used applications are in the dock also _vee.

incase you mis-understood 43, i keep my often used folders in the sidebar, but not my applications. i keep those in the dock.
when i say often used folders . . .
i use #1 "working files" folder for work in progress(either repeat jobs or art/files created inhouse)
#2 "output files" folder(for jobs w/ art/files created outside and supplied on disk or ftp-mainly ad agency stuff)
#3 to be archived - no description needed. i keep #1 & #2 seperated for archiving purposes.
also, i keep a "final pdfs" folder in the sidebar . . . these are the pdfs located on a shared volume on my rip that have been trapped & checked against some kind of hardcopy - we use these for impo, proofs and plates. gives me quick access to the pdfs everyone else is seeing. ie: customer proofs, customer service, pressman, etc.

vee

I am not on an OSX computer right now so I am going from memory. When you are in the finder and no windows open. If you go to view and select options you should see snap to grid.

Thanks guys. _vee, I was mis-understanding, I thought you were refering to the dock when you said sidebar. ops: ops: Your way sounds pretty organized, ...might try something similar. Thanks again.

edit: My *snap to grid* was already unchecked. HD icon still resets to upper right hand corner upon restart. :x :?
