Hang on shutdown / restart
Recently I've been getting hangs when my I use the Apple menu restart
and shutdown commands. It'll spin the colored ball, then just sit there. It
seems to remain fully functional after the ball goes away. I have tried
everything that I can think of, i.e. repairing permissions, rebuilding
my Classic desktop, zapping pram, shutting off all applications, quitting
Suitcase, checking system fonts with Font Doctor, clearing font cashe,
running Pref Treatment... Is anybody else having this problem, or do I
have a six demon bag on my hand? I can shut down using the "sudo
reboot now" command line, which makes sense, but nothing else seems
to stop the machine's processes. :?
It's been doing a few other strange things like changing the system tones
and hanging random jobs in my print que (reinstalled all my ppd's), but
otherwise seems to be running pretty much normal.
Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried starting up in safe mode and tell it to reboot that way from there?
I assume you are now using 10.3.8? Instead of 10.3.7 like your profile says?

I swear, my brain has progressed towards being a cream cheese danish as
today has gone on. ops: I am still on 10.3.7., still having a bad taste from
the update that took away my dual boot.
Just tried it a couple of times and it restarted properly once, and then not the
second time, both from safe mode :?

10.3.7 really screwed up my machines. Once 10.3.8 came out, it solved a lot of my issues. Sometimes I miss 8.6...
Could also try to repair installation by using your OSX CD.
My best recommendation is get a chocolate malt on the way home, it's partly sunny up there in Seattle from what I can see from my front window.

Hangs on restart/shutdown? Open the computer to make sure it's not a windows machine in disguise..

I had the same problem before updating to 10.3.8. I found it to be caused by the Apple Mail program that was running in the background. I had to quit Mail before shutting down or restarting.

I checked to make sure the insides didn't say Dell Definately Mac
I don't have Mac Mail running to my knowledge (via peek a boo). I'll get the update for 10.3.8 tonight, unless I have time earlier. I'm figuring it's some program or process that's stuck in uninteruptable mode, but I'm not enough of a unix whiz to figure out which it is :?
Thanks for the input, folks.

This may not have anything to do with your problem, but it is a similar situation I had a few years ago running classic.
I had a brand new monitor, (can't remember the make or model) and the monitor had USB ports built into the base.
I thought that it was pretty cool, so I plugged a few USB devices into the monitor and the USB devices all worked perfectly.
When I went to shutdown or reboot, it would just hang. I ended up having to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button, letting it shut down and then turning it on. OUCH!!
Once I unplugged the USB devices, it would reboot and shutdown perfectly. Not sure if this is similar to what you are experiencing, but try unplugging everything that is plugged into the Mac. Just have a basic mouse, keyboard and monitor. Make sure you don't have Zip drives, external drives, USB ports, cameras, IPods and so forth attached.
See if that helps.

Thanks for the input, Joe.
The Mac is powered down for the weekend now, but I'll try it first thing on Monday morning. I hope that's it. It really seems to be more of an annoyance than anything, but I think that it means something else could start going in the pot on me. :?
I've at least narrowed it down to the Classic environment. Somewhere in there it's not accepting the Shut Down command line that the Apple menu gives it. "sudo reboot" command line works just fine, and if I restart without the Classic environment it resarts just fine. I'm worried that an extension or font in Classic has gone south, and narrowing that down will really suck :x
