Copying files to a network from OS X
Copying files to a network drive or from network drive to network drive via OS X has almost always resulted in errors anyway, but to overcome that I would copy to my hard-drive first and then back to the server. Lately though when I try to drag a folder from my desktop to the network drive, I get an error that .DS_Store already exists and therefore it can't copy. I know what the .DS_Store file is, but I've never had this problem before. The only way I can work around this now is to create a new folder and copy the files into it rather than copying the folder. The error only seems to come up when I am trying to copy a folder. Anyone else run into this? :?:

what type of server are you connecting to? and how? (afp/smb?)
we run a win2k server that we connect via AFP, we never get the errors you are describing..
are you on system 10.2.6?

I am running OSX 10.2.6. I am connecting through the finders connect to server which I believe is AFP. I've been told by others that this is the only method I can use to maintain resource forks (most of our files do not have extensions on them and there are many OS 9 machines on the network). After some research this weekend, I think the .DS_Store problem may be a security issue, but that doesn't solve copying files on OS X for me yet!

the Connect to Server from finder will allow you to connect via SMB and AFP, so you could still be using SMB and not know it..
when you go to connect to server you should see a couple of top level options..one being Local and the other being the names of your PC workgroups..
everything in the local folder is going to be your AFP shares, all the workgroup servers will be SMB shares.
I believe you can also get info on a mounted share and it will tell you how it's connected (appleshare or SMB).
the .ds_store files haven't been a problem for us..other than the fact that they do get scattered all over the server.

If you are connecting to a Solaris Volume, you may be using an appleshare emulation software like Xinet's KA-share, or Helios EtherShare. Perhaps even a free version like netatalk or CAP.
These softwares "emulates" appleshare on a unix drive. They all have particulars on configuration, since they are not native appleshare. That may be the root cause of your issue.
My other guess, is that your OSX may may be connecting to solaris via Samba, which is a Windows to Unix sharing software. Or, perhaps even using NFS Maestro.
All this is just guesswork, however. OSX is great in that it allows many protocals for server connection, the trick is knowing which one it is using...based on the server it is connecting with...

We are using Xinet's KA-Share to emulate the AppleTalk...any chance you know what setting I should be asking the IP people to check out that would make it a problem with OS X but not with OS 9?

Choneysett,
While I'm not up to speed on KA-Share's configs, I did strike upon your .DS_Store clue.
DS_Store is used by the OSX finder to log data. And it's permission sensitive. I've not been able to determine the why's and wherefores of why this file is written to the directories. For it's not wriiten all the time.
I know there are some utilities programs that clean up these DS_store files -- that sounds like a PITA.
Only our OS 9 macs connect to our KA-Share server, but now that you've got me curious, I'll try our OSX macs to the KA-Share and see what happens. I'll also read deeper about the DS_Store file, and see what that's all about.
I'll share if I learn anything useful.

If it is a permissions issue. You can try one of two things. Control click the desktop and choose "get info". turn down the "ownership & permissions" tab. Make sure you are the owner of the desktop folder. Click the "apply to enclosed items" button. This will allow you you to read write and delete all the files in the desktop folder.
Or you can do a search in your home folder for ".DS_Store" files. You will need to add the criteria "visibility" to find it. In your results you will get hundreds of files. There will be one in each and every folder. You are looking for the one that is in the first level of the Desktop folder. when you find it, in the top pane, control click it, chose "get info" and set the permissions as I said above. Good luck.
PS. i am unable to copy more than a few K between network shares without locking my OS up too.
