Let's talk trash

yeah I'm talking to you!

I'd like to hear what others do about emptying their trash bins whether it be using a third party utility or command line because I find the 'secure empty trash' painfully slow at times.

For example, I don't like opening fonts across the network for obvious reasons and always drag the font folders to my desktop and activate it from there. The problem comes when I move on to the next job and want remove all instances of the previous job which had over 200+ fonts. Deactivating and removing from Suitcase is no problem until you throw the font folder in the trash and try to empty it and are given the message that the files are still in use. Forcing the trash to empty with that many files can take a few minutes which doesn't seem like much but when you have to do it quite a few times during the day, it does become annoying.

I use a third party app called BatChmod sometimes which can remove permissions and force empty the trash in an instant when dealing with many files. Unfortunately after using it once, it converts the trash bin into a bloodthirsty bottomless void which will immediately delete all traces of any files you drop in there for the remainder of your session and the only way to get the trash bin working back to normal is to reboot. So the application works but not the way I want it. That makes me a sad panda.

takin' out the trash

That is one serious pain in the butt.

What I do it instead of a full re-boot...just log out of my user and log back in. takes all of 15 seconds and usually "disconnects" those fonts from suitcase.

If not...then it's a full re-boot.

I know fonts can slow a system down whether its just to many open, trying to move them or deleting them. I was brought up in a DTP environment that had about 20 work stations and ran 3 full shifts. Our Managers at that time insisted on keeping a "Master" set of fonts on the server and copied a set to each and every work station. If any new or "customer fonts" were used then they were temporarily added to the folder and "cleaned off" at the end of the work day. I have since used this method at my current work place and insist all my work stations (4) use this method. Having 5-800 mb of fonts on a HD is really nothing, and as long as I maintain the "same" fonts thorughout, there are no problems, and no slow downs.

This is a situation I often see in these forums and wonder why everyone insists on opening fonts "across the network" why not just maintain the same current fonts on all the HDs? Am I missing something? I have a separate partition on my HD og 1gb that holds 500mb of postscript and opentype fonts and an additional 250mb of True Type fonts (I try not to use) And control everything with Suitcase X

hey thanks! Good tip.

the only bummer is you still have to close all applications and re-mount servers.

I keep fonts for jobs local and use the temporary fonts option in Suitcase X. Then when I'm done I just "deactivate" then "remove" the temp fonts and Suitcase won't "remember" them and try to reopen them for the next job. I can then trash the fonts from the HD after the job is finished without the message that they are active.

isn't adding temporary fonts done through the menu though? Can't you drag-n-drop temporary font folders instead of navigating through menu's?

I'm not lazy... just like being as efficient as possible when it comes to doing these mundane tasks.

"Command [apple] T" in Suitcase X gets you right to the list to pick your fonts folder. I usually drag the fonts from the server to the desktop so by default the folder is listed as soon as I shortcut key to add them.
