works functions

folks

what kind of things does your place do for a works "do" or function - something to keep the morale up

where i am they did bowling, dinners out, xmas dinner - stuff like that, but since the attitude some people foster here is very "us and them" few if any actually turn up! the usual crowd do (we have a name for them - best not used here), and one manager said in a management meeting one day..

"if they dont turn up they should get disciplinary action....." - i know - i know - a terrible thing to say. they meant it too - so i shot them down, as did a couple of other people.

due to the "us and them" attitude, getting anyone out for an evening, day, hour...is tough - especially since everyone has had to pay for their evening as well - hardly surprising that attitude exists eh!

so - i suggested a barbeque, they get a mini bus to fetch folks, lay on food and booze and a little music and the minibus takes folks home again - company pays and in company time too - it went down as a good idea

and i suggested some live music, a free bar and some food, minibus again and a good night for all - but this time the company pays.

so - whats your shops attitude and what sort of things do you do to have a bit of fun? (yeah - that last comment will land me in it)

Several years ago (pre-computer days) we chartered a 80' fishing boat and organized a full day fishing trip out of San Diego. Almost 80% of the shop pitched in and paid the then $35 apiece for the opportunity to go fishing. Stripper, presmen, proofers, and managers alike all had a good time. It was good just relaxing offshore with plenty of fish being caught and plenty of beer being swilled, the "me vs You" issue went overboard with the bait. 8)

Now I hardly hear of anything other than a company bowling team happining, and that is pretty clicky.

Nothing, Absolutely nothing. Didn't even get anything for Christmas, but a forced unpaid week long layoff. During, which the sea hag boss called me saying she was concerned that I didn't apply for paid time off. Like I'm going to give up my paid vacation.

However, the super cool production manager is in a band with some other printers and we go get sloshed and rock out every now and then.

this year was free - workers only

thanks sparky - i'm not sure fishing is a good idea but we have a large reservior nearby....i get sea-sick having a bath ops: - yes i do wash <before jezza and ppv etc jump in there...> i have showers

if i get permission i'll wander around and chat with some folks and ask what they'd like to do

thanks guys

around here that stopped years ago when one of the pressman had too much free booze and said some things he should only say in private. Not in front of the bosses wife. That and the bar tab did it.

I used to work for a small company where the pay was just okay but the fun more than made up for it, unfortunately, the fun doesn't pay the mortgage!

They would rent out a block of hotel rooms on the Oregon coast for everyone and their families for a whole weekend. We would play beach football and have huge bon-fires on the beach with drinking and BBQ... good times, good times!

Sometimes, they would rent a huge 60person jet boat for a river excursion down Hellsgate canyon on the Rogue River complete with dinner and drinks at a stop halfway down the river.

Now.... Nuttin'!

Every other year the company would pay for a trip to Vegas for a long weekend, employees and spouses.

Haven't done that in a few years, think we are just too big now..

Aside from the Christmas party, no other company outings.

Our shop seems to have about 2 big events per year; the xmas party, and then a summer do. Xmas is usually a company paid dinner with a few complimentary drinks and some kind of entertainment (this year was a casino night), and last summer, we had a bus arranged to an out-of-town golf course for golf in the afternoon, and then a steak dinner.

We also have lunches put on by our social club for some of the holidays like Thanksgiving or Valentines Day. They don't always get organized, but it's nice when they do.
