Calling all Nerds - 12" g4 Powerbook boot issues

OK, I need some help here....Long story sort
-HDD failed - seems to have physical damage drive became very loud no boot etc...
-Was able to recover files after 3 days by booting computer on angled surface (least amount of noise at this angle)
-recovered files - CCC all files to firewire -
-Installed new drive - in the process of unassembly plastic socket (POWER) broke off of logic board
-Soldered socket back on - tested good - tripping copper prongs booted to chime - reassembled ran great
-noticed upper left of PB would be hot (by power in/mic) but everything ran fine
(thought it might be due to increase to 5400 rpm drive
-next morning pb power button not working
-unassembled and checked solder point - copper prongs in plastic socket would not boot PB when tripped but
-solder points would
-re-soldered points and anchored base to logic board (plastic stems only) with superglue just to secure
-copper prongs booted fine to chime when tripped
-re-assembled and boots only to blank gray screen order of boot is - chime, screen gray, cd/HDD spinup, screen does the black to gey flicker - HDD is active - no grey apple screen - just blank???
-PRAM reset does nothing - cannot boot from cd - (although it sounds like its trying)
-Im thinking logicboard fried - but Im not getting the tone or powerlight error -

Suggestions PLEASE?????? Pulling out hair on this one.[/i]

replacing the drive with a 5400 RPM replacement wouldn't do that. I tried a 7200 in my PBG4 and it did add a bit of heat but mostly from battery draining faster.

I'd say the broken component did something or the possibly the iron was too hot and ruined a trace. Just a guess though. It used to happen a lot when repair electronics if we had the wrong iron for small work like circuit boards.

I heard the faster drive wouldnt affect heat dispersment

I was real careful & gentle on the solder - prepped the piece & just a touch to re-attach - I was using the proper tip & all very clean - and all the trip tests gave a good tone - but if I did burn it or damage it - I thought I would get a logic board/power error?

They were wrong. The platters spinning through the air alone makes the drive hotter. A cooler drive is a happier drive. Unless you have a real reason in laptops I always use 5400's. That said I don't think the drive has anything to do with it. It's possible you mashed up some of the layers in the board. While it was working it may have heated up to the point that it shorted. Just a thought.
