I've been involved in finding my replacement or a new hire a couple of times recently. I always use
http://www.craigslist.org, but its success depends how popular it is in your area. I've always gotten flooded with replies with 2-3 days.
Here's an ad I posted last May, which got tons of replies (from totally incompetent "graphic designers", but this is Portland):
Small commercial printshop has an immediate opening for an exceptional person experienced in the following:
• Proficiency in the graphics/prepress area: preflighting, trapping, imposition, outputting film/laser prints, troubleshooting, creative talent
• Are fully competent using Mac OSX, Adobe CS, Quark, font management, archiving, PDF proofing, etc (also need to possess enough competency using a Windows computer for the occasional Publisher, PageMaker, and Word files supplied by clients)
• Bonus if you know enough about web design to make minor changes/updates to our websites
• Are familiar with old-school darkroom tasks like stripping film and burning plates
• General knowledge of offset printing, inks, paper, and bindery/finishing processes
• Friendly and responsive customer service skills, predominately telephone and email, occasional walk-in clients
• Bonus if you can operate bindery equipment like the cutter, folder, paddywagon, etc
The position is located near downtown Portland and is full-time, M-F 8:30 - 4:30. The company is very small, very casual, and flexible if you cannot work these exact hours. While there is some creative design work, this is not a graphic design position and is more suited for someone who has worked in prepress and understands the technical aspects of a prepress workflow. This is definitely not a position for a web designer wanting to get into print design - and if you have no web design knowledge it will not disqualify you.
We are presently conducting interviews and will likely hire the first person who has these skills, on the spot, to begin training and familiarize you with everything. Be prepared to possibly start work immediately, though for the right person we can probably hold out if you need to give a notice of resignation with your current job. Please respond with a brief description about your work experience and yourself, a link to any online galleries/portfolio of your work, your résumé (pasted into an email, Word doc, or PDF - do not send anything other than that - we will just delete it), and your expected salary.
