Back in the '80s I was in a big Compugraphic typeshop in New York, a few months after Suffolk County (on Long Island) had passed a law mandating proper lighting and keyboard heights for computer workers.
I was having headaches and wrist pain and I asked the boss if I could turn the monitor away from the windows and get a taller chair.
He said, and this is a direct quote that I'll never forget: "This isn't Suffolk County. Quit complaining and get back to work."
I found a new job, 5 bucks more an hour, too, about a month later. I was one of his best operators and he got fired soon after.
Two years later the Mac was elbowing its way into our shops and we adapted or died. Me, I'm still alive. Watch those eyes and fight for a good chair!
