I think as long as you got computer skills, there will be opportunity in the future.... just my .02 you just gotta have an adaptability to your personality.
I agree with _vee that, even though a process would appear to be ALL AUTOMATED, there would still need to be a tech to keep it up to date and running smooth. plus you'll have to have a trouble shooter.. we aint goin nowhere, you just better know yo 'puter stuff. but thats just my feelings on it. 8)

That's what I'm saying man....
You have to adapt for sure, and we'll always need a "tech person" of some kind in between. And if that's the only position to fill, guess what.... I aint' given it up.

I guess I don't get the message. Is there a concensus that a pressroom focused forum, or section, would be useful and beneficial?
How can you go wrong when you communicate with the pressroom? There are plenty of pressmen out there who have questions for other pressmen. There are plenty of pressmen that have questions for prepress people for one reason or another. Like, to check and see the validity of some line of F.U.D. they're being sold at work from their prepress department.
There's a real, tangible benefit to having that kind of forum here as it's own section. Maybe it grows to more than that down the road, who knows?

I was for a press section and still am, I understood where Cory was coming from too though, and who's to argue with "the man"... any hoot, Im still for it and see the same benefit you speak of Matt, plus I have had questions regarding what would work best on some of these gangs I lay out, and things that can avoid ghosting and such other "layout elements"... just my thought on it.....
Communication can't hurt, it only helps. Of course unless there's a "lack of it"..... 8)

You should post those questions here under General Prepress anyway - no?? Most of us do Impo and know how to avoid exactly what your talking about.

In my opinion the best way to get on with the pressroom is communication, face to face, don?t bullshit them and always explain any of their questions to the best of your ability.
The truth is that most press minders are not that interested in prepress they only want good plates that print well.
I might be wrong but this site would probably not attract that many printers because of the simple fact that they are printing. Most of us are lucky that we can pop into this site any time we like with a simple click of the mouse. Can?t see many printers going home and coming here or they would be already.
Turning it round I would not be that interested in say how the automatic washup on a Heidelberg 74 works, just happy that it does.

I understand Cory's desire not to add too many forums. I can only imagine that it took a long time to get the activity that there is here today.
I do appreciate the professionalism and the candor that I found here, as well as the practical solutions to everyday problems.
I would like to hear from pressmen, or even better, from former pressmen that made it into Prep ...
... but if it endangers the professionalism and candor that this forum enjoys, then forget about it, that's fine, leave it the way it is.
For instance, the "desktoppublishing.com" forums are a bit overwhelming, and I find it's a bit harder to get a serious response there. I wouldn't want PPF to get like that.
scottws,
Thanks for the link. I think this might be useful ... albeit not as good as PPF is for Prep.
Admittedly, many pressmen aren't into using a 'puter after a day's work, especially since the trend is for at least 12 hr shifts. Thus, I can see why there are fewer useful forums on the subject.
Meanwhile, most of us "preppies" can answer a post or two on our coffee breaks.
