conversion??

My company is considering converting the workstations from Mac to PC.
Seeing how there's very little difference anymore, still, one concern comes to mind. We have hundreds of Preps templates made on the Macs.
Is there a way anyone knows of to convert those templates to PC ?? I shudder at the thought of having to rebuild them
Thanks in advance.

You should be able to use them on Mac or PC. If you haven't saved them with the .tpl extension you may want to do that before using them on the PC. The PC doesn't like files without an extension.

Having said that, I loaded up Preps on a PC a while back after having used it only on the Mac before and quite frankly I thought Preps on the PC sucked. I went back to the Mac in short order. I just didn't care for the preview or the template editor and the overall feel of it on the PC. It just felt like a cheap freeware (except it ain't free) knockoff on the PC.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully, I'll be able to pull off the switch over with the same templates. The PC thing isn't cast in stone yet so I'm busy prayin' to the pre-press gods. Meantime I'll copy over the templates and re-name them. ( and do it on O.T. )

The only possible reason for switching from Macs to PCs must be $$$. But that is insane! PCs cannot do what Macs can. Prepress is hard enough as is. Why make it unbearable???

Using a PC would make your job unbearable??? You must have it pretty tough. I know that not everyone will agree with me, but I see no significant advantage of a Mac over a PC. Years ago I would have agreed with you. But now... they both work just great. Like anything, you just need to know what you're doing.

We have used Mac created templates on a PC at another one of our locations - Dont forget to copy your marks *cough 8O at me. and yeah, add your extensions...

and I agree 30yrs...once there was no doubt, mac ruled the publication field, but now, meh, I dont really prefer one OS over the other. To the accountant, $2400 machines vrs $1600 machines...

apple needs a tower for we commoners

You are forgetting that Mac can be used to install both Windows, Linux and Mac OSX while any PC can run only WIndows and Linux.
There is your advantage.

Let's not forget quality of components in Mac compared to PC as well as "feel" of the MacOSX which is much better.

Design would be another thing, how about security?...

All in all, I believe it justifies the price.

Let me point you in direction of fresh article (Laptop oriented) but still viable for discussion:
Mac vs PC

I dont know if it makes it unbearable but I do agree it makes it more difficult. I would much rather use a MAC than a PC for prepress apps.

Hey folks, as much as I enjoy he banter betwixt Mac vs PC. It really has nothing to do with my question. Joe are you certain that .tpl is correct ?
because I'll certainly give it a shot. I just want to be sure about the file extension.

Yes, the extension for templates on Windows is ".tpl" (They work on the Mac with that extension too.).
