well, it looks like the inevitable is about to happen. This afternoon the IT guys brought in and installed a PC. It runs on Windows Vista and 4 gigs of ram and an Intel duo core 2 processor. ( they built it ). I have the disks for Adobe CS3 design premium and a demo of Pitstop 7.1 and someone from
Kodak will be here to load a fully functional Preps 5.2.2. I'm thinking it's a trial version that's a step above the demo. I guess that I'll have something to report by tomorrow night or Fri night, although I doubt I'll be connected to the RIPs or platesetters by then. One thing for sure, the damn thing is fast as light...

Well, here goes. An unbiased first impression. First, we're having an issue converting the templates. The Preps rep thinks it may be because each template ( about 60 ) has sub-templates for different page counts and positions of the half web flats. So I made a test template. From that point on, everything was ok. placing a job was no faster or slower than on the Macs.
I saved one pdf in particular to test Pitstop. This file takes at least 10 minutes to open on the Macs ( G5 OS X Tiger Acrobat 7.09 Pitstop 7.1) There are a a ton of vector gradients, all with Device n issues. Once open and pre flighted and we try to run an action, we get the old 'raise without a handler' error and 'Acrobat must close', which it does, problem not solved
The doc opened in less that a minute on the PC. Ran the action, got the error.
But did not get the 'Acrobat must close'. (By the way, it's Acrobat 8 on the PC.) This allowed me to make a postscript and re-distill without having to locate the page and go through the re-opening process. I really liked that.
Most of the time pages like thatcrash the G5's and our two G4's freeze up when trying to open the pdf. ( get many of of these from one particular designer who insists on building vector gradients in spot colors rather than bitmapped gradients in cmyk ). Other than that, ( remember, no RIP interface yet ) Everything went smooth as silk on the PC. I haven't made a final judgement yet, but right now, I'm far more open to the change over. We'll be on line to all the servers Monday when REAL testing will kick in.

That shouldn't matter. We have many templates with a lot of impositions inside with half and 3/4 webs with a lot of different page number setups. You probably had your preferences on the Mac set to Preps version compatibility instead of cross-platform compatibility when you originally made the template. Go back to the Mac and change it to cross-platform and re-save the template and then see if you can use it on a PC.

Joe, is there a way that I could save a copy to the desktop and make the conversion to a copy as opposed to modifying the original templates? I shudder to think of the consequences of screwin' up the templates...

I would just select your template folder on the Mac and do an APPLE+D keyboard command which will duplicate the whole template folder. Then I would open the ones from the copied folder edit them and you'll still have the originals.

When you use Prinergy 3.0/4.0 and Preps as a floating license the .tpl [Templates] live on the AraxiPreps share of Windows OS but are used by both Mac and PC version of Preps. Should be no problem.

IT is the reason you're getting switched to PC. That and $$...
If we all used Macs, the IT guys would be really close to out of work.
Macs don't need IT.

Either way I hope it works out for you.
