Hmm...this could look embarrassing, but the reply rate on Kodak is pretty low so I'm gonna risk it and update...
Culprit was a PDF page placed in Quack (6.52), which had a properly embedded CID font; it preflighted OK. I stupidly ignored Quack's warning about it, and then promptly didn't twig in PREPS, cos PREPS failed the whole job; all sigs/sides. Workaround was to PostScript out of Quack without it, then place PDF straight into PREPS, move to Run List on appropriate page. Then all OK.
This means, I guess, that you would never be able to print PS out of quack with a PDF of this kind. Must try and do the same with it out of Indy CS2.
Weird...or maybe not.
