Preps 5 - filenames cut off in File List and Run List
Hiya-
I'm new here (just registered), and I searched around for the answer to no avail, so forgive me if this has been answered already...
We just upgraded to Preps 5.1.2 in OS X 10.3. Now, in the File List window and the Run List window, filenames are truncated, so that determining which page is which in the list is impossible. For example, if a file is named "12345_Savannah001_Fpo.eps", this gets cut to "12345_Sa..._Fpo.eps" in the Run and File lists in Preps 5. Notice the page number ("001") is not visible. So when working with, say, 400 pages in the list, it gets rather difficult.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot,
Drewstre

I would ask, "how are the .eps files being created and can you put the page # at the beginning of the name or shorten or...
instead of "12345_Savannah001_Fpo.eps" make it "Sav001.eps"
by the way it's labeled it appears you are saving eps pages out of acrobat, is that correct?...
maybe some more info will help others in here help you.

Hiya-
Thanks for the reply.
The files are generated as part of a RAMpage workflow. The first five digits are the job number. The file I used as an example was actually from a PDF. If I dump the 20 page PDF called "12345_Savannah.pdf" into the RIP, it breaks it up into single pages, and then creates FPOs of those pages for placement into Preps. By the time it gets to Preps, the filenames look like "12345_Savannah001.nPdf_Fpo.eps" and hence my problem. The job number's gotta stay, so that leaves me with about two characters to identify pages.
I was also wondering if anybody else using Preps 5.1.2 in OS X 10.3 is having the same problem. If they are, it's probably a Preps/Creo problem, and will hopefully be addressed soon with a patch. If nobody else is seeing the same problem, that's a me problem, and I'll have to resolve it on my own, or with the help of all you fine and friendly folks.
Thanks again,
Drewstre

not sure cause I'm not using Rampage, but is there a way to change the way it names the files?... could you maybe tell it to name like> "12345_01-Savannah.pdf" or could you change the name of the original pdf to > "12345_Sav.pdf" or if the job # can be reduced to just the last 2 digits.....
there might be a setting to allow more characters in the _fpo's names...
sorry I can't help more, certainly wish I could... give it some time I'm sure someone in here will be able to get you where you're going.

as long as they are named so that they will sort in page order, you can just look at the preps page number, if not use a rename tool before you bring them into rampage. I have dealt with the same problem and never found a "solution" to it. I also seem to remember that you can get the whole file name somehow by either doubleclicking or otherwise trying to modify the file, and then using that as a point of reference in the run list to know the other page numbers, once again assuming that the files are named in such a way that they will be in order when you bring them into preps (which in a 400 page document is the only way to go, so you can use the automatically add to run list option)

Well, you're not alone. I'm running into the same problem. I'm not running rampage though, and I haven't used it in quite some time. I'm running nexus and I can change the name of my FPO file, and what I did was start the file name with the page number and then the lot identifier, then the job number. I can see the first 8 characters of the name, then I get the ... and then the last 4 or 5 characters. So far, it works pretty well.
One thing I found out in my adventures in trying to fix this, you can remove the .eps from the file name and still have it work. The only hitch is that you can't add files by the "add files" button, you have to drag and drop your files right into your run list. That at least removes 4 characters from your name. Also, try dumping the "FPO" from the name. That's not really necessary.

Click the file in the file or run list and do a COMMAND+I and it will show you the whole name in the box that pops up. Still a pain if you have a lot of files but it's about the only solution I have for this problem.
Complain to Creo support. They have a lot of room in the file and run dialog. Why they cut it so short is beyond me.

I totally believe it's to make it a pain to use other rips other than creo's. You put a .job in there and no problems. I cried the day that Creo bought Senicsoft.
The only people you have complaining about this is non-creo users.
they'll tell you to buy printergy.

this was fixed in 5.1.4. I just installed it yesterday. I did notice that the app doesnt want to launch by double clicking on a .job. A license issue warning comes up.
If you launch from the dock, then double click the .job its ok...
