New Preps user....HELP!!!

Converting over from Presswise and I'm starting to understand Preps somewhat.

In Presswise on a tabloid book if we needed to move the pages closer together at the fold we could enter a negative number for the gutter. For example: -.375 would move all of the left hand and right hand pages toward the fold 3/16" each. Preps will not let me enter a negative number. Is there an easier way than moving each page individually?

Automatic pagination for multi-web jobs? Right now we are having to make the signatures and manually paginate them as flat work.

I've saved the biggest for last: WEB GROWTH COMPENSATION? We've followed the manual (PDF file) to a tee. Just as a starting point we want to use the Cyan unit as the reference point and leave the magenta and yellow at 100% and print the black at 100.1378%. The printout is hard to explain. It looks like it prints the black plate at 100% and then prints it again at 100.1378% and superimposes it over the top of the first black separation. It also does something similiar to the C-M-Y separation even though they are set for no web compensation. Anyone else using the web growth compensation in Preps successfully? It's the MAIN reason why we decided to take the plunge into Preps in the first place. So far I still haven't heard back from Creo and it's now the weekend. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, it's the top of the line Preps version... Pro 5 I believe.

In run list, you can select all left hand pages, double click on them and enter negative value, etc..

I have no experience with WEB, we are high-end Offset shop so I can't help you there

Good luck.

For changing the postion of the pages. If you slect the pages you want to modify in your run list, then press Command + M you will be able to modify the position of the pages. TIP: You can select multiple pages in the run list by holding down the shift key.

What type of binding style are you trying to do? Perfect Bound, Saddle Stich

Yeah, I found I can move the pages like that. I was just hoping for an easier way.

We do both perfect binding and saddle-stitch. Mostly saddle-stitch though. We run a lot of stuff with a combination of full web, 3/4, and half web on the same run as well as running two different size plates during the same run.

So are you wanting to beable to select Automatic when you add signatures to the Signature List? Or are you wanting something automated when you build a template in the template editor?

Yes, I was hoping for more automation in the pagination of jobs. It appears we're going to have to add one signature and then copy and paste that in for as many flats as there are in the job.

More importantly right now is the web growth compensation which, unless I'm doing something drastically wrong, does NOT work.

you don't have to copy and past just click add as many times as you need to add signatures.

Have you contacted Creo Support for the web compensation? If you just bought Preps you should have some support for it.

Yes we just bought Preps but we're not sure on the support as we bought from a graphic arts supplier that we bought the CTP from. We're still trying to figure out if we get support from Creo or the outfit we bought Preps from. The guy that was here for the training from the supplier obviously had no experience with multiple web jobs or web growth compensation and we're still waiting to hear back from him as he is supposed to researching those problems.

On the pagination issue, okay we can add in the signature as many times as we want but we still have to paginate manually by placing the page numbers in the imposition and we have to choose "flat work" instead of saddle stitch or perfect bound. Doesn't seem right to me.

The way Preps works you will have to paginate manually. If you have just one signature you make your template a Saddle Stich Binding method. Number your Pages 1-16, or however many pages you need for just one signature. Then when you bring add the signatures to your Signature List Preps knows which that the first half of the signature is number 1-8 and the second signature is numbered 9-16 and so on.

To find out if you have support for Preps. Call Creo support and let then know you have a problem. Do not ask if you have support. Just act like you do and if they ask you if you have support tell them you just bought Preps.
