shopping for a workflow

Hi everyone,
I am in the midst of doing a ctp and workflow project at a newspaper and Creos workflow offerings have me curious. We will be doing alot of commercial work (granted only on newsprint) on a new variable web width press. I would like to hear any opinions anyone would like to offer about creos latest offering, anything at all...I wonder if Paul Willis lurks here?

Feel free to email me at
vmoore4@stny.rr.com

Thanks

Prinergy comes in three levels, Prinergy, Prinergy Publish, Prinergy Evo. For a newspaper and commercial shop you should look at Prinergy Publish or full blown Prinergy. Incredible workflows, Prinergy Publish is on the "low end" and doesn't come with the Oracle database and some other features. If you like, I can put you in contact with the appropriate Creo personl

Matt,
I have been in touch with the creo people, had dinner with them at Nexpo in Dallas, talked to thier workflow engineers and seen brief demos of the workflow. Problem is they are not very entrenched where newspaper workflow is concerned so there are not alot of places from which to get opinions. My IT people despise oracle and the creo people told me they have a sql alternative, I asked them that specifically,if this is incorrect then they have already given me bad information. Synapse news manager would also be part of the big picture here. I realize creo is the dominant player in the commercial workflow industry but on the newspaper side it is a hard sell. The few sites I have talked to that have it love it as do the commercial printers I have talked to. I run into so many people that complain about thier workflows that I just want ot make sure whatever we end up with is right for what we need to do.

I'm pretty confident that there is a SQL version available. I looked into Prinergy at one point myself.

One of the big problems with "workflows" is people generally don't recognize the fact that there are limitations to workflows. And that to overcome some (most if not all) you may need to adapt the way that you work. Rather than trying to force the workflow to work the way they want to. There's a certain amount of comprimise or adaptation involved.

Matt,
Im ok with compromise, it is a foregone conclusion when doing a project of this magnitude. We are building a new print facility, installing a new press, going ctp, installing a new editorial front end system and moving the printing of multiple sites to one location all in the space of about 6 months, a very agressive schedule. We are ctf now and rarely have issues with files printing, we have a good procedures in place so I am not concerned about that end of it. You mention you had looked at prinergy, I wont take your comments as an endoresment, just an opinion, but can you expand on that. Feel free to take the conversation offline and email if you prefer.
