Brisque Maintenance

I was organizing some old paperwork recently that was left by the previous Prepress Manager (before she quit last year), and found a "Maintenance Log" for the Brisque. It described routine maintenance that was supposed to be performed on the Brisque either weekly or monthly.

One of the maintenance tasks for the Brisque was to "Rebuild the Desktop on the Brisque from the Mac" and I had heard of that before, but was unsure on how to go about doing that exactly.

I had been shown once before several years ago by a co-worker at another place, but he was the one who did all of the maintenance and therfore I didn't really need to know how to do it.

I've since forgot, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how this is done and how often it should be done.

I do routine maintenance on the Brisque every few days by doing a FSCK and also by deleting files on a regular basis to keep the hard drive clean.

Other than the FSCK and the Rebuilding of the Desktop, is there anything else that needs to be done?

only thing I can think of right now is trash temp files and core dumps. As far as rebuilding the desktop, we've never really had to so can't help you there. Have you tried Creo's crappy password over-protected website?

On one of the administrator volumes of the Brisque (log into the Brisque as root) there is an admin tool that will allow you to empt the trash and rebuild the desktop of the shares. Running FSCK is a good idea as is defragging the volumes of the Brisque. defragfs is the command I think. If you log into SMIT as root somewhere in the file system options there is the ability to defrag the volumes.

You can Rebuild the Deaktop for the Brisque through the mac using "EtherShare Admin" application (should be on one of your macs)
Launch the program then pick the Brisque you want to Rebuild disks on. Login as Root. (password ripro) then pick the disk(s) and rebuild.

I was informed this is done automatically in Brisque v4.1 and higher

Thanks everyone. I had never heard of trashing the temp files and core dumps so that is new to me and I'll try all the suggestions.

Hey gig0, I have tried Creo's crappy password over-protected website. I get frustrated there because it seems so slow. Your analogy of it being "password over-protected" is right on and pretty funny to me.

Thanks to all for your input.

I have complained to Creo several times about their useless and slow site but they just don't get it.
I am sure a lot of people have done the same but for some reason they keep it like that.

Maybe they like frustrating users so they don't use their website??

I've complained several times that they needlessly use SSL for eCentral downloads and suggested that if they insist on using SSL that they invest in more SSL accelerators. Obviously they haven't...

I hate eCentral - not only is it slow, but I find it a pain to navigate.
