Preps Folio Mark.

I'm trialling PREPs v5 for MacOS X. INposition has the capacity to add a folio mark to imposition placing a small black square at the edge of page bleed with the folio reversed out of it. This number refers to the imposition page sequence and is very useful for checking impositions, or folding a mock up. This feature is also great for publications that don't have folios. (I just finished an 88pp catalog with no page numbers).

Does PREPs have the facility to add such a mark through the "Smart Marks"?

In your static marks, there is a signature collation mark. It does what I think you ask for. We use it mostly on perfect bound jobs. Put it in the grind off, and it will help the bindery order the sigs correctly, as it steps them down.

Also the flat identifier text is helpful. We enter this

$jobname $date $time Sig:$sig-$side

in the text field, and preps puts all pertinent information in from the job name...

Good luck , and I hope I answered the question that you asked!

Hey, UbarW -- I am interested in these collation marks. We don't do too many perfect bound books, but I'd like to try it out on the next one. I looked in the Preps manual and (surprise) couldn't quite grasp how to use them. Any chance you could post some screenshots of the template and maybe the dialog where you add them so I can see what your settings are?

Thanks!

Signature collation mark B is the one we use. If you tell it to split the gap in the grindoff, with the top just below the head trim, the mark width .125" wide if you have a double 1/8" grindoff, and tell the template to step -.5, it should work for you. The overall length should be long enough to handle the number of steps you require, ie., 6" at .5 per would give you room for 12 sigs. Preps will look at the number of sigs when you print, and set them in for you. You would see a black block that is .125" wide, centered in the grindoff, and the sig number reversed out of the block. Email me at dickwentland@ipkoke.com and I will send a pdf of the the screen cap.

I tried it out and I like it! Do you start the mark at the head, and is it placed just on the front of the sheet?

You can have it on front our back, or both. The idea of it on the front in the grind, is so that it shows on the backbone of the folded sigs. When you put your dylux together, or the finished book, it should step in logical progression. A good way to double check the assembly.

We always start at the head...

Collation mark - available in PREPs 4.2 and earlier. familiar with this feature - this isn't what I'm refering to.

Text mark or "Slug line" - again available in earlier versions of PREPs. The 2 that I use are:
$jobname Sig:$sig OUTER $date
$jobname Sig:$sig INNER $date

One of my feature requests to CREO, is a side variable that is more intuitive than just A & B. I prefer "OUTER" and "INNER"

Back to the issue at hand. The feature that I'm looking for is one that I currently use in INposition. It adds a small black box with the imposition page number reversed out of it. Again this is useful for doing mockups of jobs that do not have folios or perhaps have insert pages.

Here is the a screengrab of the button in INposition that generates the marks.

I have generated a pdf file from INposition, a 16pp section, from a dummy quark file to demonstrate this feature.

Sample pdf for download

There is a way to do this in Preps. I've got a printout of an old tech notes describing the procedure (it's pretty complicated - involves editing the PPD). The web address I got it from is no longer valid since Creo bought Preps, but I'll try to find it on Creo's convoluted site. The document was called "ScenicSoft Preps Tech Note111 - Adding Folio (Page) Numbers to a Preps job."

If I can't find it, I can scan the lasers and post it.

Couldn't log into Creo's site for some reason, so here is a PDF:
