Copy/Paste, Drag & Drop, File Place
Mac OSX, Creative Suite 2
We are having a VERY heated battle where I work. I would like to get outside opinions on this subject. Here goes...
Our designers insist on putting Illustrator and Photoshop images in their InDesign files by either dragging and dropping, or by copying and pasting the image in.
Our printer has asked that we use the place command under the file menu. That way if anything is wrong with the image at least they have a file to go back to and work with.
I am siding with the printer. I have witnessed too many problems with dragging and dropping or copying and pasting.
I would love to get your opinions and experiences on this subject. THANKS

I have seen instances where copying and pasting will give you different color results as compared to file -> place.
It's an awful idea to copy and paste/drag and drop. It's easier, sure, but like your printer said, if the image files aren't there to work with, and something needs to be fixed, it's impossible.

lol, I didn't know you could copy and paste/drag and drop, but it doesn't sound copesetic. I always use the place command. Now if Illy would get that command back I'd be a happy camper.
BTW, if the printer is requesting they do it that way, what's their damage? Just freaking do it.

I've seen Pagemaker and Indy files done that way. Bad idea, place the image.

Pointy you rock!
That's is exactly what I said... "if the printer is requesting they do it that way, what's their damage? Just freaking do it."
They claim that it is faster to drag and drop, or copy and paste. Its the lamest excuse I have ever heard.

Am I missing something? You can drag a graphic file from the Finder into your INDD and it will show up in Links. Sometimes that is quicker than using the Place command if you already have the graphic file handy in an open Finder window.

If it shows up in the links then you're ok. Now, if a unknown name graphic shows up in the link pallet and there's no way to link it you may have a problem. Often times there is no link, they're embedded using a generic name. That can be a problem.

Every time I drag and drop into indy, it places the file, and shows up in the links window. I know it was an issue in PM, and maybe early versions of indy, where you would drag an image in, and it would OLE it, but in CS2/3, it doesn't seem to be. Infact, in CS3, you can drag multiple images in and place them all at once, which is a great time saver. In any case, i've never had any issues (res., color, linking, ect.) with dragging and dropping images into Indy CS2

placing is the best and safest method
copy pasting complex illy artwork can lose some attributes when in indy - so it's best to have a very good proof read.
if it were my choice i'd go with what the printers are asking - simple as that. copy pasting is a lame excuse, and if it went wrong we all know where the blame will lie....
