Ok,break it down for them...they save,let's say 3 seconds each time.So 20
drags = 1 minute. How much do you charge per hour?
Now compare to doing the job over, with placeing.

Time Savings?

It is Saturday morning 3 a.m. and I am called for a press check. I notice a problem with an illustrator logo. I tell the pressman to shut down the press and that the problem must be fixed. I then have to call in the pre-press department to come in at 3:30 a.m. on a Saturday. Yes, they are ready to kill me... I don't blame them.

The press was shut down for 2 hours and four new plates had to be made. Yeah, I'd say that dragging and dropping or copying and pasting is a huge time saver (can you feel the sarcasm). This one logo cost us about $1000.

There is nothing wrong with drag & drop in Indy except you don't get the import options dialog box which can be useful at times. Copy and paste is just pure evil.

It seems that some folks might be confused with the question at hand. I believe this is strictly pertaining to copying or dragging elements directly out of Photoshop or Illy and pasting or dropping directly into an Indy doc. The idea of dragging a file from the finder or desktop to an open Indy doc is different all together and in my experience and not really an issue unless you want to access the import options for the given format. However, copy/paste - drag/drop from Illy or Photoshop directly to Indy is a big no-no for the most part.

It can cause linking issues, editability issues, color issues, flattening issues, headaches, nausea, sleeplessness, irritability, violent behavior, rickets, the bends and last but not least spontaneous combustion.

I'm sure there are special situations in which it would work out okay.... It'd depend on your desired output etc. I mean, the integration is there for a reason but if you don't know how to do it right (and for the right reasons) then don't do it. Stop being a little baby, link the files correctly (place them), shut your mouth, do your job and leave me alone!

A similar yet totally unrelated question for ya'll:

Is it OK to export PDF's from ID for print, or print to PDF only?

(a not so heated battle, but one my co-worker and I disagree on)

I tend to like exporting a PDF from Indy using a custom built preset. We've had fantastic results working this way....

Thanks for the 'off topic' replies. I expected more of a debate, but I'm, glad the general consensus is to export.

My co-worker constantly gives me a hard time for exporting (I've set up a few distill settings that work great). He's always warning that if you don't print you are asking for problems. So far, I've had no problems exporting and will continue to do it that way!
