AI files in INDD

If I have files in .ai format with crops & bleeds and I place them in .indd (cs3), I can't see the bleeds. I've tried all the options and it only places the file showing the cropped image.

I can open and resave as EPS files and RIP them that way, but then I have to sit and open & close each file and also I would like to avoid having to flatten the files. If I open them right in acrobat, I have to Pitstop the bleeds back in.

What am I missing here?

When in the Import image dialog box click the button that says "Show Import Options" or something like that. Once you do that you'll get another dialog where you can select the import size such as crop, media, bounding box, etc.

I just tried it with some of the sample art that comes with Illy CS3 and it works for the different sizes like crop, media, etc. Must be the way the .ai files were created.

Adobe screwed the pooch a couple versions ago - when you place an .ai file in InD, it won't show anything beyond the document size no matter what you tell it in the import options. You can add 1/4 inch to the page size of the AI file and then it will show up. Sadly, I don't think this is recordable as an action. At least you don't have to flatten them, as you mentioned with EPS.

Ahhh...that explains why I saw the difference I saw. The one I noticed changing were within the document size.
