pdf trapping

Can anyone tell me if Indesign will add trapping to an imported pdf? and can i control it?

or do i need my RIP to do this? (it wont, by the way!)

Currently i always add trapping in illustrator manually. But when we dont have the fonts, i'd like to be able to just go straight from the pdf.

is this possible?

fantastic, thanks.

I did go in here, but didn't know if it would effect a pdf. Thanks that's great. This will solve numerous problems.

We're currently not using Indesign (quark) but i am initiating a switch over. Indesign seems to be far more pdf compatable. True?

yes, you'll also find a lot of other things about indesign as time goes on that are far better than quark. quark's really a piece of crap.

you'll need a third party trapping solution.

? for what? I trapped PDF's using Indy for years. Found it faster for small jobs then running through Trapwise. In fact my workflow was open Indy file, export as PDF. Import that PDF into a new Indy file, set the trapping in the trap pallet. Now comes what I guess most call the tricky part.
When you print to your rip you must select separations and Application built in Trapping .

Here is a link all about it. It's what I based my workflow on altho I altered it a bit to fit my needs.
His link tells about how to generate a trapped composite PDF from InDesign.

yes indy trapping is pretty straightforward and when i use it for my packaging layouts on a full B1 sheet i get very good results - very acceptable

do be aware however if you place an illy file in indy it wont get trapped - you'll have to do that manually in illy - or pdf out of indy, place pdf, assign trap preset and away you go just like almaink said

alma - interesting - in your piccys you have the trap placement as "centre" - so that works the same as illy/indy in so much as a 0.4 stroke gives a 0.2 trap right?

i set mine to "spread" at 0.2 - it works fine for me.

oh - 0.2 is in points as opposed to mm - you can type 0.2pt in the trap field and it converts it to mm

hopefully this will cover a couple of finer points in the trap preset boxes rejames
