ID image data merge prob

Hopefully I can explain this clearly.

Have an ID file that im doing a data merge that contains both text and images (50+ of them). Ive set the path to the images folder correct in excel, and saved it out as a .csv and edited it to have the "@" symbol in the correct column.

The text works fine. Its the images that give me a prob. The images are located 4 folders deep on our server. When I goto merge from ID, for some reason, I get a window indicating it cant find the image placeholder. When I put the images 3 folders deep, redo the path in excel, resave the .csv, etc, etc update ID and remerge, the merge works and the images show up.

Is there some sort of limitation on folder/path structure that ID cant read past to get files from a location? Seems odd that I cant go past 4 folders deep and the data merge craps out. Noted, this is not a multiple merge either.

Ive even tried testing off the desktop and going a few folders deep just to verify im not typing anything wrong and go as simple as possible. I can do 3 deep, bombs out on 4.

Suggestions?

i just did a catalog the same way with 1000 pics of headlights. I put the pics in a sub folder in the indesign document folder, there were like 4 or 5 folder of pics so i consolidated them. I then just did some excel magic to make sure all the link were correct and that they all said the same thing for the path. It made it easier to organize them and track down any problems. Perhaps try getting them in a single location. though i had this only one or 2 folder deep from my desktop

Hey Steve...

Actually, all my files (the ID and .xls/.csv) are in a single location in a folder and then all the images are in their own subfolder within, so all the paths to the images are exactly the same in the spreadsheet. Only thing that changes is the image name itself.

All the images are .psds, btw. But that shouldnt make a difference.

Scratching my head on this one....

mine were all jpegs actually. Customer didn't want to convert to them to tiff or pay us to do it and was just told us to go with it. Maybe its not liking the .psd try coverting to jpgs and changing teh extensions in excel file and see what happens.

good luck

Images need to stay transparent for what they are being dropped on in ID. Not seeing any trouble that the files are .psd

My main prob is why the merge wont work when I put the images in a folder structure that on our server.

Example of my paths in the excel file:

This works:
/Volumes/Production/On File/Name_Badge_Template/person1.psd

This does not work:
/Volumes/Production/On File/Name_Badge_Template/Images/person1.psd

Why is the one extra folder (Images) causing the merge not to find the path?!

Just to simplify everything to double check I wasnt missing anything, I did a test just working off my desktop and just made a folder and subfolders and placed the image in and moved it all around in there. Same result. Once I get down deep enough, the merge cant find the image.
