I hope I haven't mis-understood your question, but to select objects behind other objects hold down the cmd (ctrl on pc) key while clicking on the object. Each consecutive click goes down an object. If it's in a group I assume you use the direct selection tool instead of the selection tool, otherwise you'll get the whole group.

clicking with cmd doesn't work in a group, or does it work for everybody else?

I know this is a silly question, but you are ungrouping before selecting.?

To answer your other question we are not having any such selection problems.

Use direct selection tool to select top object within a group, then use Right mouse click Select>Next Object in Group (or select this from Object menu). Will enable selection of 'stacked' objects within a group.
