Terms question
Hello.
How do you guys call the process that you do in InDesign, Quark, Ventura and so on, when you make a newspaper, magazine, book...
I have a dispute with my russian colleague.

At my shop it's called layout until you get the file press ready, which
in our case, generally includes imposition of the original file. But at my shop
that's called imposition, oddly enough.

The layout of text is called pagination.

We've always called it "layout" or "creative", but we have a separate department for that. Once files are approved they move to "prepress" for preflighting, proofing, etc.

You are then laying out a newspaper if you using an existing design and replacing the content.
If you are starting from no previous example I would then say you are designing a newspaper.
At least if you are in Ontario, Canada.

DERIVATIVES paginate |?paj??n?t| verb
ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: noun of action from paginate, from French paginer, based on Latin pagina ‘a page’ (see page 1 ).

we call it page layout - basically thats what you are doing - laying out the pages

page layout, page assembly file, creative, quark doc, ID file, preliminary page file, finals, design layout, concept, composition, ...
all acceptable terms we get here for the various forms and stages of files for print.
