Have a job that the customer supplied in ID CS2, and they want us to make some type 10pt. The screenshot shows that the character size reads "10pt (14.31)". What does it mean that there is info in parentheses like that? The number in the parentheses seems to be closer to the actual size of the type, even though I typed in 10 points.

I've never seen this before, and couldn't find anything in the help files.

When you change the size of a font, that's what it does. Such a PITA.
Got to Transform (F9), click on your text and on the flyout of the transform menu > scale type attributes- and that'll get rid of it. Alma has a script to get rid of it also.

I have seen this happen when you group text boxes and art together and resize it with the pointer tool (or just grouping a bunch of text boxes together) and resizing them.
