InDesign and "Preserve CMYK"

Is there any way in which InDesign can output Images embedded with a CMYK profile differing from the CMYK working space without performing a conversion? I've tried various settings, but the only way I've found to prevent the conversion is to ensure all CMYK images are tagged with a profile identical to the working space.

Sure, I do it all the time as my default workflow - turn off CM in ID ("Emulate Adobe InDesign 2.0 CMS off"). Also, make sure you select Composite Leave Unchanged in the Ourput tab of the Print dialog. This will simply pass CMYK numbers to the RIP unmolested.

Hey wow ...that works. I guess I'm a little taken aback that the "preserve CMYK" check box doesn't really, well, preserve CMYK entirely. Also means I can't have Photoshop and Indesign color settings synchronized if I want to honer the embedded profile in CMYK images by default.

Ok, I'm having people say that it shouldn't matter whether embedded profiles are honored or disragarded upon opening and that "preserve CMYK" should preserve all CMYK in the document. I've now done tests both ways and have inconclusive results.

The jobs I'm working on will ALL undergo a conversion unless I disable color management (either in the way Dan outlined, or by selecting "Preserve Numbers" for the CMYK color management policies).

But ...I just did a little test where in I created a swatch in Photoshop with an embedded profile differing from my InDesign CMYK working space, and no matter what I do with the color settings, honoring or disregarding, I get consistent CMYK output with "preserve CMYK" se;ected...contrary to what I get with live jobs.

So, is anyone getting consitent CMYK output honoring embedded profiles while outputting "preserve CMYK"?
