not to sure about variable images but i do mail merges all the time with it. I save the database as a .csv. then you create your design. When all is finished i copy it to a master page and add in the text box where the variable data goes. Then open the datamerge box and select the source file and link each database entry to the correct box on the master page. Preview it and then create a document using the data merge box, forgot whats is call. I do mail merges and numbering on it all the time. You might need to get a upc font if you do that sort of stuff. The indesign help section is pretty good on the data merge function.

got in today and did some reading and manages to make a file that would use a different picture for men and woman. I was very excited that it worked. i made a new coloumn using the If statment and if it = m i put a male picture and if it didn't it took the feamil picute. You set it the if colmn as "@photo for header then the answer to the if statement tells were the file is located. the next i need to see if I can do multiple different pictures for different if statements. I have done a couple of the just data but am looking forward to working an image in to a file

yeah i know there are lots of programs from inexpensive to way pricey that handle variable data much more efficiently then indesign does. If you really start using it a lot you might want to check it out. When i do a decent size jobe of say 15,000 pieces there are limits to how much the rip can process and how long it actually takes to rip. It is fun though butting getting the sales people to sell those jobs correctly that is where the problem is.
