Automatic Image Res?

Hi everyone,

Is there a way to make InDesign automatically place images at a set resolution?

Our designers too often place a 72dpi image on a page without checking its res, rejoice at how big it looks, and proceed to design a page around it, then sound offended when told it's actually only a quarter of that size.

It would be much better if InDesign automatically imported low-res images at their 300dpi size.

Very grateful for any suggestions.

Cheers,

Damo.

There is a thread about this annoyance in "rants and raves" about how designers never size and place images properly.

Why are your designers working with 72dpi images anyway?

The right way to do it is to resample them to 300dpi and resize them to the size you need them in Photoshop (they will look like crap no matter what, but I'm sure you know that).

InDesign cannot resample images to 300dpi upon placing. It must be done in Photoshop first.

Well that all depends doesn't it?

ALL our designers work 72/96 dpi until sign off, then HiRes is obtained and our company atrworks accordingly.

A layer effect applied to 72 will work just as well(ish - sort of) to 304.2/120 (dpi/ppm, not screen) all you gotta do is dupe the layer across. Cheap and fast, but not perfect I'll admit.

(Got a designer 'freind' looking over my shoulder suggesting... add some noise, gotta go need to punch him)

I have been using a script called LinkOptimizer:

http://www.zevrix.com/linkoptimizer.html.

It will make your images 100% and automatically replace your current images. I start with 300 dpi images though.

Use FlightCheck Studio to preflight the document while it is being created. You set the rules and it complains when you violate the rules. Very handy...
