PDF exporting from InDesign - attention Matt Beals

hi all
hope someone can help with this
I posted a similar thread some time ago and you were all helpful, especially Matt Beals. Here is the link to that thread - would have continued posting on it but guessed that you might not see it..
http://www.prepressforums.com/ftopic...derasc-15.html

At the time that I posted this thread, I was confused regarding the relative merits of exporting a PDF directly from InDesign and printing to postscript first in order to distill. Matt explained carefully that there was no advantage to printing to postscript first, but I have encountered another problem.
I have continued exporting PDFs directly from InDesign with press settings supplied by our printers (moving transparency to another layer to avoid bolding and using DSC2 files for 5th colour purposes) and have had no problems until recently.

Then a file (that seemed no different from any other) started to behave weirdly when exported. The text all jumped out of place. It doesn't seem to be a font problem on my system, and it behaved the same way regardless of which machine was used to export it. It happened only with the one file - all others were fine.

Eventually I by-passed the problem the only way I could find by printing to postscript and then distilling and it looked fine and printed with no problems that I am aware of.
Has anyone got an explanation for me as to what this was all about?

thanks for any help
Karin

I'd need more information and / or the original files you are talking about and the settings used. I'd also need a clear explanation of what is supposed to happen and what is happening now.

Glad to know things in general are going well.

screenshots

Hi
thanks for responding - and so quickly!
Would it help if I sent a screenshot of the pdf?
I have never figured out how to post images here, though, how is it done?

I don't recall how to do it. I usually just put a link up on my website. As long as it is under 60MB compressed you can just email it to me. Otherwise, I can set you up with a FTP account.

By the way, are you any where near Cape Town? You're in South Africa right? I have a friend down there at Unifoto in Cape Town, I was just wondering...

weird

okay, so this is weird
this all happened a while ago - just hadn't had time or peace and quiet to post this query till now. So I went back to the file - re-exported it, so I could show you the problem, and it didn't happen!
so strange
so I dunno what happened but thanks anyway..

I am in cape town, by the way
have heard of unifoto but not your friend
who is it? good to have local contacts..

I am new in the industry, as I said before - working in-house at a publishing company, doing photo-retouching and repro checking before PDF export..
the industry seems to be moving this way - many publishers are loath to outsource work to repro houses since InDesign took over and became so userfriendly..
sign of the times
does your friend resent this?
