Indesign create outlines still leaves fonts

This is driving me mad. I create outlines from text which is within a text frame, it acts like it worked and indeed when I click on the text with the white arrow tool I can see the paths. However the text remains highlightable as text if I double click in the text frame with the black arrow. When the file is turned into a PDF I check the doc. properties in Acrobat and the fonts are still present and the text is still acting like 'font text'.

I think this has something to do with the fact I created a coloured text frame and typed the text within it then create outlines by highlighting the text and clicking create outlines. I have managed to get it to work previously by just selecting the text frame and clicking convert. This method however means that the text frame disappears and I am left without the coloured background.

This is very easily done in Illustrator and I can't believe there seems to be no limit to the stupid qwerkiness of InDesigns processes. For a company that made photoshop they really seemed to have screwed up with this app.

Anyway rant over, can anyone help?

Thanks

you are correct,
It appears to be yet another "feature".

That is weird.
Depending on the "selection" tool, you will either lose the box (with the selection tool) or retain the box with the type (with the type tool) as an "anchored" object.

very nice, but strange. Not sure how I would use this feature.

good to know.

Of course you can do this in Illy, kinda like outlining strokes, can't do it in ID but you can in Illy.

so is it impossible to keep the box and have the text change to paths leaving no trace of a font? It just seems so strange that you can actually see the paths and the points on them but its still behaving like editable text.

okay, I got it to work.

Here the science:

make your text box, type your text.
color the box
select type tool, highlight type, create outlines
now select box with selection tool
go to object menu and select anchored object/options
position custom
x relative to text frame
x offset 1" (or any number you like)
hit okay
choose the direct selection tool
marquee select the type that is now outside the box
go to object/anchored object/release

you now have a box and type as separate items.

Great. thanks for your help. I ended up exporting to illustrator and sorting it out. It seems quite a large over-sight on the part of Adobe to make that so complicated though.

Not really they did it that way so you could still edit it like regular text.

But then what is the purpose of create outlines if you have to then go and manually detach text from text frames by physically moving it outside them and re-selecting it? Surely it should be an operation at the end of a workflow that is easy to use and gives predictable results? Having the text editable after the event may well be useful but they should have an easier method to commit the text to paths. Otherwise create outlines is just a redundant step you have to go through to get a fontless file.

If you use the direct select tool to select the text box then convert to outlines no text and each letter is a separate object. Using the select tool groups the objects, selecting with the type tool leaves the text editable.

Yes but if you use the direct selction tool OR the other selction tool the coloured text box disappears and I need to keep it. The box only seems to stay if you highlight the text.
